What Does a Standard Label Actually Tell You?
Retrofits and equipment changes can leave a vessel with components specified to different standards. I recommend identifying each valve from its documentation and measured interfaces, rather than inferring its specification from the vessel’s country of construction.
JIS, DIN and GB identify standard systems, not complete purchase specifications. Marine JIS F product standards, European flange standards and Chinese marine flange standards cover different aspects of a valve assembly. [1], [2], [3], [4]
| System | Relevant examples | What to clarify |
|---|---|---|
| JIS | JIS F 7427: bronze marine valves | Applicable product standard and connection drawing |
| DIN/EN | EN 1092-2: cast iron flanges; EN 558: valve installation lengths | Flange specification and face-to-face series separately |
| GB/T | GB/T 2501: marine flange connections and mating faces | Exact flange designation and applicable valve product standard |
These examples explain the scope of different standards; they do not establish cross-standard interchangeability.
Where Do Replacement Mistakes Happen?
The same nominal size does not establish interchangeability. Check flange outside diameter, bolt-circle diameter (PCD), hole count and hole diameter. Then verify the mating faces, gasket specification and flange thickness. A matching bolt pattern alone does not establish a suitable joint.
Installation length is a separate question. EN 558 specifically addresses face-to-face and centre-to-face dimensions. A valve with compatible flange drilling may still be too long for the existing pipe gap. Handwheel clearance, actuator access and maintenance space also matter. [3]
Physical fit must also be distinguished from service suitability. Do not treat JIS 10K and PN10 as automatically equivalent. Confirm the applicable pressure–temperature rating, materials, fluid compatibility and valve function. Agree any required class documentation before production.
What Should Buyers Confirm Before Ordering?
I recommend attaching a checklist to the RFQ:
- Valve tag and function.
- Standard number and edition.
- Nominal size and pressure designation.
- Flange dimensions and facing.
- Face-to-face length.
- Body, trim and sealing materials.
- Operating pressure, temperature and fluid.
- Installation orientation and available space.
- Inspection and certification requirements.
Where records are incomplete, provide nameplate photographs, dimensioned sketches and measurements from both pipe connections.
Ask the supplier to identify deviations on a drawing and obtain approval before manufacture. For critical applications, agree inspection points and document requirements at the same stage.
How Can You Prevent the Next Installation Delay?
A replacement fits only when its interfaces, installation dimensions and operating requirements are all verified. Compare quotations on that confirmed basis: an attractive valve price can lose its advantage once rework, repeat freight and lost installation time are included.
Before your next dry dock, send JS Flow your valve list, existing drawings and measured connection details. We can review the requirements with you and provide proposed valve drawings for confirmation—so dimensional questions are resolved before the valves reach the vessel.
